About
挢 (jiǎo) is an action verb that originally meant to lift, raise, or hold aloft with the hands. It is a phono-semantic compound: the semantic radical 扌 (shǒu, 'hand') indicates a physical action, and the phonetic component 乔 (qiáo) dictates the pronunciation. The traditional form, 撟, uses the more visually complex phonetic 喬. Beyond physical lifting, the character later acquired abstract meanings of correcting, straightening out, or even falsifying and pretending, illustrating a shift from literal gesture to metaphorical manipulation.
