About
The modern character 松 has two distinct roots. For 'pine tree', it is a phono-semantic compound in which 木 (tree/wood) provides the meaning and 公 the sound. The meaning 'loose, relaxed' was originally written with the separate character 鬆, combining the hair radical 髟 and the phonetic 松. During simplification, 鬆 was merged into the simpler 松, so the single character now denotes both a coniferous tree and the state of being loose or unfastened. The loose sense comes from the visual image of disheveled hair implied by the hair component.
