About
华 is the simplified counterpart of 華, an ideogrammic compound that originally depicted a blooming plant with symmetrical leaves and hanging blossoms. Its earliest meaning was simply "flower", but it quickly took on the extended senses of splendor, brilliance, and flourishing prosperity. Owing to these associations with cultural magnificence, the character became closely linked to the Chinese people and the nation of China, a usage that remains central today. The simplified form discards the complex plant depiction and instead uses 化 (made up of 亻 and 匕) to supply the pronunciation, while 十 is preserved as a remnant of the original 華, greatly cutting the stroke count.
