席 is a phono-semantic compound, with the semantic component 巾 (cloth) at the bottom and the phonetic-semantic component 庶 reduced at the top. Originally, it referred to woven mats of bamboo, reeds, or grass, laid on the ground for sitting or sleeping. As these mats were used for seating at gatherings, the meaning extended metonymically to the seats themselves, and then to the events held there, such as banquets or assemblies.
