Originally a pictograph of a cooking pot (the ancestral form of 甑), 曾 now consists of 丷, 田, and 曰, stylized remnants of the vessel and its rising steam. It was phonetically borrowed to serve as an adverb meaning "previously" and as a kinship prefix for great-grandparents or great-grandchildren.
