About

The character is a phono-semantic compound used primarily as a geographical proper noun. The water radical on the left indicates a body of water, while the component (wú) on the right gives its pronunciation without adding semantic meaning. It appears almost exclusively in names of waterways and related places, most notably the Wu River (浯水) in Shandong province, and historical or literary names such as Wulu (浯屿) and Wuzhou (浯洲), an ancient designation for the island of Kinmen.
