About
The character 邑, originally a pictograph of a kneeling person (卩) outside a city wall (囗), represented a settlement, city, or county. In classical Chinese, it can still function as an independent character meaning 'fiefdom' or 'administrative division,' but its primary role now is as a semantic radical. When used on the right side of another character, it takes the form ⻏ (阝) and indicates that the character relates to a location, jurisdiction, or town, as in 邦 (nation or state).
