About

床 signifies a bed, couch, or any framework for resting and sleeping. Its current standard form consists of 广, a building or wide roof, and 木, wood, together suggesting an indoor wooden bed. This replaced the older variant 牀, which combined the pictograph 爿 (a bed frame) with 木 to directly depict a bed made of wood. The earliest writing was simply 爿. Over time, the meaning broadened from a wooden sleeping platform to any base or framework, such as a riverbed or machine base.
