About

觉 is the simplified form of 覺, a phono-semantic compound combining the meaning component 見 (jiàn, 'to see, perceive') with a phonetic derived from the top of 學 (xué) without 子, sometimes written as 𢦏 (zāi). Its original meaning was to awaken from sleep or to realize something through perception. The simplification compressed the upper portion into 龸 and replaced 見 with 见, greatly reducing strokes while preserving the visual association with sight. The character has two readings: jiào, referring to sleep (the state from which one awakens), and jué, meaning to feel, sense, or become aware.
