About
酊 (dǐng) is a phono-semantic compound formed by the radical 酉 on the left, a pictogram of an ancient wine vessel denoting alcohol or fermentation, and the phonetic 丁 (dīng) on the right. From its earliest texts, the character appeared almost exclusively in the descriptive compound 酩酊 (mǐngdǐng), which depicts a state of complete, helpless intoxication by alcohol. In modern medical and pharmacological usage, 酊 took on a new role as the translation of the English word "tincture", a concentrated liquid herbal or chemical extract dissolved in an alcohol solution.
