About
In ancient scripts, 丁 was drawn in two ways: one depicting the walls of a city (now 圍) and the other a nail (now 釘). From the nail image came associations with strength and solidity, and the character's primary meaning shifted to an adult male or robust man suited for labor or military service. It also functions as the fourth of the ten Heavenly Stems, which are used for ordering, ranking, and recording dates in the traditional calendar. Furthermore, 丁 describes small, cube-shaped or diced items, especially in culinary contexts, where ingredients are chopped into uniform pieces resembling a nail head.
