About

(dǐng) is a phono-semantic compound formed by the radical on the left, a pictogram of an ancient wine vessel denoting alcohol or fermentation, and the phonetic (dīng) on the right. From its earliest texts, the character appeared almost exclusively in the descriptive compound 酩酊 (mǐngdǐng), which depicts a state of complete, helpless intoxication by alcohol. In modern medical and pharmacological usage, took on a new role as the translation of the English word "tincture", a concentrated liquid herbal or chemical extract dissolved in an alcohol solution.
