About

Originally a pictograph of tangled plant roots, 亥 meant "roots" (now written 荄). It was phonetically loaned to represent the twelfth and final Earthly Branch in the traditional Chinese calendar, associated with the Pig in the twelve-year zodiac cycle, and is now used almost exclusively in chronology, astrology, and historical dating.
