About
呗 originated as a phonetic transcription character in Chinese Buddhist translations, pronounced bèi to represent the Sanskrit pāṭha, referring to rhythmic chanting of scriptures. Structurally, it is a phono-semantic compound: the semantic radical 口 (kǒu) indicates vocalization, while the phonetic component 贝 (bèi) provides the sound. The traditional form 唄 uses 貝 for the phonetic element. Beyond its religious origin, 呗 developed a distinct modern usage as a neutral tone final particle bei, placed at sentence end to indicate obviousness, resignation, or a lack of alternatives.
