About
奄 combines 大 (big or person) stretching over 申 (to extend), now often seen as 大 over a modified 电. This originally depicted covering or being covered, giving early meanings such as cover, envelop, and remain. Over time, the character shifted to mean suddenly or hastily, and also came to denote weak, failing breath near death. The original covering sense is now written 掩.
