Definitions

chén (noun) dust; dirt

Etymology

Small  flakes of earth

About

The character "尘", representing dust or dirt, evolved from its traditional form "塵" which etymologically combines the component for deer "鹿" with that for soil "土" to visually suggest the dust stirred by moving animals. This original construction focused on the notion of fine particulate matter suspended in air, and over time the meaning extended beyond the literal to encompass metaphorical senses such as the mundane world or trivial concerns. A later structural simplification produced the form "尘", logically integrating "小" for small with "土" for soil to directly indicate tiny soil particles, thereby maintaining the core concept while reshaping the character's graphical composition.
