The character 昔 (xī) originally depicted strips of meat drying under the sun, with a top element representing the meat and the bottom radical 日 (rì) for the sun. Since curing meat takes considerable time, its meaning shifted from the physical process to the abstract concept of time passing. Eventually, the literal connection to dried meat faded, and the character came to signify the past or former times, serving as a temporal marker in historical and literary contexts.
