About
The character 攸 (yōu) has a left side made up of 亻 (the "person" radical) along with a vertical stroke, and a right side that is 攵, a hand holding a stick. Together these components depict beating a person, giving the original meaning "to hit". That sense fell out of use, and 攸 was borrowed purely for its sound to serve several functions in classical Chinese. It works as a relative pronoun equivalent to "that which" or "the place where", and as an adjective describing something distant, drawn out, or moving swiftly. It also appears in compound terms that convey a sense of lasting remoteness.
