Sitting on the wood radical 木, with water 氵 to the upper left and the phonetic component 刅 to the right, the character 梁 originally denoted a wooden bridge crossing a river. This spanning timber support later gave rise to the architectural meaning of a main horizontal roof beam that bears the weight of a building. In time, the idea of an elevated connecting structure broadened to describe any ridge, such as the bridge of the nose or a mountain crest.
