shǐ (noun) arrow; dart

Etymology

Pictograph of an arrow.

About

The character "矢" originated as a pictograph of an arrow, with its form evolving into the present stylized configuration. Its etymology is directly associated with the object it depicts, and the primary meaning of "arrow" has been consistently used. In classical Chinese, through phonetic borrowing, "矢" also took on the meaning of "to vow" or "to swear". The modern character is structurally simple, consisting of five strokes and serving as its own radical without additional components.
