About
阵 originally meant a battle formation or array, and now also serves as a measure word for brief periods. It is the simplified form of 陣, which combines the hill radical 阝 with the chariot 車, a visual depiction of war chariots arranged in formation beside a hill. The simplified 车 (vehicle) replaced 車. From its military origins, 阵 extended to describe sudden, short-lived events like a gust of wind, a spell of rain, or a bout of pain.
