About

The character 奇 is an ideogrammic compound with 大 (dà), meaning "great", at the top and 可 (kě), related to "approval" or "possibility", at the bottom. Its original sense depicted a person standing in an uneven or asymmetrical stance, visually conveying something out of the ordinary. This idea of asymmetry developed into the mathematical meaning of an "odd number", one that cannot be divided into equal pairs. The meaning also broadened to describe anything strange, unusual, rare, or surprisingly wonderful, capturing the essence of things that deviate from norms and provoke surprise or curiosity through their distinctive nature.
