The character 虽 is the simplified form of the traditional 雖, which originally denoted a type of reptile. Its traditional structure combines the insect radical 虫 on the lower left, the bird radical 隹 on the right, and an upper phonetic component. Through phonetic borrowing, it entirely lost its zoological meaning and became a grammatical conjunction meaning "although" or "even if". The simplified form removes the bird component 隹, leaving only the mouth radical 口 above the insect radical 虫. This greatly reduced the stroke count while preserving its function as a subordinating conjunction in modern Chinese.
