Etymology
Depicts a swirl of clouds up (上) in the sky.
About
云 is the modern simplified form of 雲. Its ancient pictographic shape combines 上 (up) with a swirling curl below, depicting clouds floating high in the sky. Early on, the same graph was borrowed to write the verb "to speak" or "to say". To prevent ambiguity, the rain radical 雨 was later added on top to create 雲 specifically for atmospheric clouds, while the original 云 continued to be used for speech. The 20th-century simplification restored the earlier form, merging both senses into one character. Today, 云 primarily denotes visible masses of condensed water droplets in the air, and in classical or literary writing it also means "to say" or "to quote".
