Etymology

About

originally depicted a right hand (the top component 𠂇, related to ). The mouth was added beneath to distinguish it from and to evoke the hand's role in bringing food to the mouth or aiding speech. The early meaning was "to assist" (compare ), but the character eventually came to exclusively denote the direction "right". The sense of assistance later passed to , which adds the person radical.
