About
The character 沙 (shā) is a phono-semantic compound combining the water radical 氵 (shuǐ) with the phonetic component 少 (shǎo), which means “few” or “little.” Sand is naturally associated with water because it is commonly found, washed, and accumulated along riverbanks, lake shores, and ocean beaches. Primarily a noun, 沙 refers to tiny, loose grains of crushed rock and minerals, sand or fine gravel. The scattered, coarse texture of sand grains also gave rise to secondary descriptive uses, such as describing a hoarse, raspy voice or the granular feel of certain foods.
