About

泮 (pàn) is a phono-semantic compound. The semantic component 氵 (water) places it within the category of liquids or bodies of water, while the phonetic component 半 (bàn), meaning "half", also hints at its original sense. Historically, 泮 referred to a semicircular pool, often shaped like a half-moon, situated before the entrance of traditional state schools or academies, a feature known as 泮池 (pànchí). This meaning later extended to describe the physical process of ice melting or thawing in spring, and from this, the abstract concept of separation or dissolving.
