About

The character 褱 is an early Chinese ideogram and the original phonetic-semantic root for the modern character 懷. It originally denoted the concept of concealing something in one's garments or carrying an object in the bosom. Structurally, it consists of the radical 衣 (clothing), which is split to enclose the component 眔, a character associated with eyes and tears. Over time, the meaning expanded from the physical act of holding something close to the chest to the abstract psychological sense of harboring thoughts, feelings, or affections. As this abstract usage became dominant, the heart radical 心 was later added to create 懷, explicitly marking its emotional and mental aspects, while 褱 remained primarily as a phonetic component in other compound characters.
