About

The character 暹 is an associative compound merging 日 (sun) with 進 (advance) to convey sunlight moving across the sky. Structurally, it places 日 above 隹 (bird), enclosed by the movement radical 辶, embedding the sun within the concept of progression. While classical dictionaries record its original meaning of a rising sun, in modern usage it appears almost exclusively as a phonetic loan for the historical kingdom of Siam (now Thailand), as in terms like 暹罗猫 (Siamese cat).
