xiāo owl; valiant; trafficker

Etymology

A bird  roosting in a tree

About

The character 枭 originally depicted a specific owl, formed as a phono-semantic compound. The bottom radical 木 (tree) sets the scene of a bird perched on a branch. Its traditional form, 梟, had a top component showing the bird's head and body; this was simplified to a variant of the radical 鸟 (bird) to ease writing. A historical legend that this owl devoured its own mother gave the character connotations of fierceness and ruthlessness, leading it to describe formidable or unscrupulous leaders.
