About
童 (tóng) is currently composed of the radical 立 (lì, to stand) above 里 (lǐ, a village). This modern structure results from historical graphical assimilation, not its true etymology. The original form combined 辛 (xīn, a branding knife) with elements depicting an eye or person, reflecting a connection to penal servitude. Over time, this association faded, and the primary meaning shifted to denote a child or youth, conveying a sense of innocence. A secondary meaning emerged for a bare or bald landscape, such as a treeless mountain.
