Etymology

A village () is an area of land () where people have fields (). In simplified Chinese is also used to mean "inside", while in traditional Chinese this meaning is written with a separate character .

About

The character (lǐ) originally combined (tián, 'field') and (tǔ, 'earth'), representing a village or settlement within farmland. Since villages were often spaced at regular intervals, also came to denote a unit of distance (about half a kilometre). In modern simplified Chinese, additionally means 'inside', having been adopted as a simpler substitute for the traditional characters and ; these were phono-semantic compounds with the clothing radical (yī) that originally referred to the inner lining of garments.
