About
The character 里 (lǐ) originally combined 田 (tián, 'field') and 土 (tǔ, 'earth'), representing a village or settlement within farmland. Since villages were often spaced at regular intervals, 里 also came to denote a unit of distance (about half a kilometre). In modern simplified Chinese, 里 additionally means 'inside', having been adopted as a simpler substitute for the traditional characters 裡 and 裏; these were phono-semantic compounds with the clothing radical 衤 (yī) that originally referred to the inner lining of garments.
