Unusually, it has no semantic component; instead, the character as a whole originally denoted existence or presence in a place. This locative sense naturally gave rise to a preposition indicating where or when something happens, and later to an auxiliary verb placed before another verb to signal ongoing action, much like the present continuous. From a concrete notion of physical location, 在 evolved into a key grammatical word while retaining its core meaning of "being somewhere".
