Etymology
Depicts an insect. Based on the original meaning "insect", now preserved in the word 昆虫. The current meaning is a phonetic loan.
About
Originally a pictograph of an insect, 昆 (kūn) retains that early meaning only in the compound 昆虫 (kūnchóng). In its modern form, the character combines 日 (rì, "sun") on top with 比 (bǐ) below. Through phonetic loan, it acquired several unrelated senses: a formal term for elder brother, a descriptor for descendants or future generations, and the ideas of multitude, togetherness, or simultaneity. Its most common contemporary use, however, is in 昆虫, the standard word for insects.
