About
The character 瘗 (traditional 瘞) combines the sickness radical 疒, the central component 夾 or 夹, and the earth radical 土. The 疒 at the top links the meaning to illness and death. The middle component, besides providing the pronunciation, visually suggests something pressed between things, evoking the act of burial. The bottom 土 specifies burial in the ground. Originally, it referred to burying those who died of illness, and later extended to burying sacrificial offerings in religious rites.
