About
亨 shares an ancient etymological origin with 享 and was originally an ideogram depicting a shrine or altar for sacrificial offerings to ancestors or deities. Because successful sacrifices were believed to bring divine favor and unimpeded progress, the meaning shifted toward prosperity, success, and the removal of obstacles. It appears prominently in classical philosophical works, particularly the I Ching, to denote auspicious and unobstructed conditions. In modern usage, it mostly occurs in compounds related to commerce, financial prosperity, and smooth development, and frequently serves as a phonetic loan for transcribing foreign names like Henry.
