About
更 is composed of 丙 (a succession of chariots, also providing the sound) and 攴 (a hand grasping a whip). Together they depict using a whip to control a line of chariots, giving the original meaning "continue" or "succession". This core idea later extended to the verb "change" or "replace", and when used as an adverb with a shifted pronunciation, it means "even more" or "further". The top component 丙 is now often written in a form resembling 曰.
