The character 退, meaning to retreat, withdraw, or decline, is structurally composed of the walking radical 辶 (辵) and the component 艮. In its traditional form, which is the same as the simplified one, 艮 originally conveyed a sense of looking backward or being contrary, which, when combined with the idea of movement from 辶, created the core meaning of moving backwards or away. Over time, its meaning extended from the literal act of stepping back or an army retreating to include more abstract senses such as declining an offer, withdrawing from a position, or a general recession or decline in condition.
