About
可 (kě) is a phono-semantic compound: the mouth radical 口 (kǒu) suggests the semantic domain, and 丂 (kǎo), an ancient pictograph of an axe handle (now written 柯), gives the pronunciation. The original meaning was "to sing", a verb now written as 歌. Already in early Chinese, the character was borrowed as a phonetic loan to write the modal verb meaning "can", "may", or "able to", denoting possibility or permission. This loan usage has no connection to the mouth or handle components; it is a purely phonetic substitution that replaced the singing sense. The structure 口 + 丂 thus simply fuses a semantic indicator and a phonetic marker without pictorially representing the act of singing.
